17hols 2022 wrap-up

cruelsummersokay hiii wow baby's first real dreamwidth post even though i made this a year ago specifically to participate in 17hols.
people have been asking me to put them on ao3 for a while, but i honestly couldn't stomach putting some of them on there because my editing brain wanted to perfect them/rewrite them... but i also didn't have the energy for that. so my perfect compromise is making a catch-all post and linking them all here for people to look at later.
1. a thousand roots, growing hansol/seungkwan, idolverse.
soundtrack: marching bands of manhattan - death cab for cutie
notes: also on ao3. viv did the most perfect podfic.
to me... this is my Perfect 17hols fill. it came to me all at once and i was able to get it down and really stay true to the prompt and the feeling i was trying to convey. even the one on ao3 has minimal editing. would not change a thing, my beautiful first child hehe. it honestly still aches when i read this but in a good way!
2. me, in your blood-stained image hansol/chan, dystopia au. warnings for violence.
soundtrack: drawn to the blood - sufjan stevens
tbh this one didn't quite fulfill the prompt (though i know for 17hols things can be interpreted different ways) but i still had a lot of fun with it. it didn't quite have the manic "haha yeah!" feel that i felt the prompt wanted, but i still had a lot of fun with it. looking back, i think verchan could've easily been replaced by chan/an older hyung, but hansol was easy for me to write so! i still am obsessed with the scene of chan's blood on hansol's cheek like... yeah. erotic.
3. when you are, where i am mingyu/minghao, time travel au
soundtrack: lost in time and space - lord huron
so this is the least favorite of my fills, probably because i didn't have a good grasp of minghao or mingyu when i wrote it. so at the very least i am proud of myself for trying a different ship just to try it, even though i wasn't exactly pleased with the end result. 100% this is a fill i wrote for the trope because i'm obsessed with time travel so i'm still pleased with some of the ideas presented in here, just not the execution or characterization.
4. mirror with three faces joshua/jeonghan/seungcheol, idolverse.
soundtrack: demi moore - phoebe bridgers
i actually am really proud of this one. i love joshy hong and his neuroticisms, and i am so compelled by thinking about his headspace coming into the idol world and how different it must have been from his american high school... being korean vs being korean-american. being josh vs being seventeen's joshua vs being jeongcheol's shua... FEELING LIKE A FOREIGNER IN YOUR PARENTS' HOME COUNTRY. yeah. the only reason this isn't on ao3 is if i edited this, i would definitely turn it into a full blown fic.
5. heavy is the head jeonghan/seungcheol, medieval king + captain
soundtrack: crown of love - arcade fire
one of my favorite tropes ever. i think i would lose myself in this verse if i let myself. a greedy, selfish king and his devoted, selfless captain... there is so much i could've done with this but didn't get the chance. very typical mishi-ism in allowing them to grow up together though lol.
6. love is a thing with teeth
soundtrack: nfwmb - hozier
i feel like me writing this was the beginning of the end for my vision of hvc lmao, i always like playing with his 'duality' like the thought that there is something absolutely insane and unhinged under the 'chill vibes' just a dude energy he's radiating. this one was just pure fun tbh! i loved it.
7. deepest, desperate downfall hansol/seungkwan, hunger games au, Many Warnings

oh man. ohhhh man. i don't even know where to begin with this one. i can blame the fact that i was heavily into the hunger games when the movies were airing, but once i built this specific version of verkwan, it was impossible to get them out of my mind. i wanted to post this on ao3 and just add a few additional scenes that were swimming around in my head... and it kept going and going. honestly it could've kept going and going. i think about them all the time. they're in my heart forever, and one day i will probably return to this verse. our endless numbered days is possibly my most ambitious fic ever, and when i do eventually revisit, there are some additional scenes i'd like to add to it. (seungkwan in the arena particularly) shout-out to kei for the blatant mishi bait.
overall 17hols was such a great writing experience last year - i essentially viewed a lot of them as writing exercises but i got to do a lot of fun things (and even write a full blown fic which is still one of the biggest milestones of my 2022 writing year) and i'm really looking forward to round 2! i think i'm going to approach it the same but just be a lot meaner to my friends hehe <3
